WINTER TERM ORIENTATION 2021

Hello All New First-Year Students,

Welcome to McLaughlin College!

It is our great pleasure to be welcome you to McLaughlin College!  You are affiliated with McLaughlin College because you are majoring in one of our nine academic programs – Criminology, Global Political Studies, Interdisciplinary Social Science, Law and Society, Political Science, Public Administration, Sociology or Work and Labour Studies. York is one of only three universities in Canada organized on a collegiate basis, where every undergraduate student is a member of a college. Your college is a social, recreational, and intellectual community comprised of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and College Fellows who we hope that you will come to know. Your college will be your home away from home. It will be there for you to help you make the transition to your all-important very first year of university studies.

McLaughlin College Matriculation and Common Read

All our first-year students are invited to participate in our “Common Read.” Each year we select a book that we think that would assist our students to succeed in their very first-year of university studies. You are asked to read Professors Thomas R. Klassen and John A. Dwyer’s highly acclaimed book, How to Succeed at University (and get a great job), before the start of classes. The book is available as a free download at the following website, http://www.ubcpress.ca/asset/20105/1/9780774838993_Web.pdf.

Our Matriculation and Common Read will be held on WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 13TH, 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm, via Zoom. At our Matriculation and Common Read, you will have an opportunity to meet our College student leaders and other first-year students, the Director of our McLaughlin College Community Choir (MCCC), and the staff in the Office of the College Head.
