Message from Dr. James C. Simeon, Head of McLaughlin College

Hello All New January First-Year Students,

It is my great pleasure to be welcoming you to McLaughlin College!  You are affiliated with McLaughlin College because you are majoring in one of our nine academic programs – Criminology, Global Political Studies, Interdisciplinary Social Science, Law and Society, Political Science, Public Administration, Sociology or Work and Labour Studies. Your college is a social, recreational and intellectual community of students, faculty and staff on a personal scale, where you can be known as an individual not a number.  We hope you have a wonderful first year at McLaughlin College, York University. It’s your home away from home.

This year we have implemented a “Common Read” and have asked all our first-year students to read Professors Thomas R. Klassen and John A. Dwyer’s highly acclaimed book, How to Succeed at University (and get a great job). The book is available as a free download at the following website, http://www.ubcpress.ca/asset/20105/1/9780774838993_Web.pdf. Please read this book before you arrive for classes in January and our Winter Term Orientation and Matriculation and Common Read, that will be held on TUESDAY, JANUARY 7TH, 11:00 to 1:00, in our Junior Common Room, 014 McLaughlin CollegeYour attendance at this important event is required.

As part of the Matriculation and Common Read, you will be asked to sign the College Register that will add you to the list of all the members of our College. You will also have an opportunity to meet the author of our “Common Read,” Professor Klassen. In addition, you will be introduced to the academic services, programs, recreational activities and facilities available to you at McLaughlin and throughout York to help with your transition to University.

James C. Simeon, Head of McLaughlin College
